… . Well I think we can all agree that they are very different.
Guess what I saw today? The V&A’s Hollywood Costume Exhibition!
Red dress photo stolen from here.
All the other photos are courtesy of these folks here.
When the Balmoral first started up the band was playing modern music which ruined the mood. Lizzy and I stood on the stern of the SS Shieldhall and both thought we wouldn’t cry.
We sobbed like children.
When the Balmoral started off and the shout went up we both began to wave handkerchiefs flying in the wind. I was so happy and suddenly I realized that 100 years ago the crowd stood here full of joy and happiness never knowing that for many this would be the last sight of their loved one. I’m not sure which one of us started crying first but when we looked at each other we dissolved into tears. You could see some of the passengers on the Balmoral were visibly reduced to tears. More cheers and more tears.
I was starting to calm down when the sun came out and we both started sobbing all over again. The sky had been dark and grey with black clouds rolling in all day and when the Balmoral turned the clouds parted and the sun highlighted the ship. We both firmly believe in our hearts that this was a blessing from the ones lost aboard the Titanic.
I stood there on the stern of the ship celebrating for the Balmoral and mourning for the Titanic. Yesterday I let the Titanic go. The ghosts are laid to rest and she will forever live on in my memories.
I think I’ll start back in the very beginning. When I first saw the images of the costumes from Snow White and the Huntsman I thought to myself five quid says I know the man who did the millinery work.
Fast forward to our millinery class today! If I had actually bet against another person I would have won! We are currently working on a beaded project, I don’t think we are allowed to discuss the finer points until it actually happens) and I’ve taken a complete twist in the way I am doing mine. Without giving to much away, I want it to be beautiful but when you get up close it’s made of things that you would normally consider ugly (and some of you may even have a deadly fear of the little beasties).
I started to explain what I was working towards and to my complete surprise Sean told me that he had the same idea when creating Charlize Theron’s headdresses and crowns worn by the Evil Queen. We talked a bit more about the costumes from the movie but I won’t spoil it for you!
I will however share something I found to be amazing. Apparently it took him FIVE weeks to attach all the feather to Charlize’s cape worn in the photo above!
Disclaimer: I am not a crazy amazing artist so no laughing. I’m working on it. You should be proud of me, I actually drew a nose on her! I hate drawing noses.
So this bad drawing is my Eowyn plan. Eowyn has boots on under her dress so I’m going to wearing my everyday Ralph Lauren riding boots. Warm and comfortable! Her sleeves have eyelets up the arm because the cuff rolls up.
I washed the fabric so it’s not so lilacish. I wish I had broomsticked the fabric before I cut it but alas beggars cannot be choosers. I literally just finished cutting all of the dress pieces out and all I need to do is sew them together.
I’m worried that I’m going to have to add an extra panel into the sides of the surcoat. I’m going to go back and add pockets into the side anyway because I haven’t sorted out my purse situation yet. (I’m hoping too make pockets big enough to carry keys, travel pass for the Nat Rail, credit card, camera and phone). I really wish I could get my hands on some sort of fur to go on the neck and sleeves of her coat because then I would make the entire costume. I forgot I need to wear a coat down to the theatre.
Oh well! We’ll just see what happens when I get there!
Which costume to make for the all night back to back LOTR showing.
I’m sort of thinking about this one. The colours are easy, the fabric is cheap and I can easily cut that on the stand without having to think about it.
I rather like the “Undergown as worn with Shieldmaiden vest/corset” or even just the undergown with the brown jumper. I love Eowyns green dress but I just don’t have time. ;{
I don’t want to deal with a wig so I’m trying to find someone blond/e. I don’t want to be Legolas because I don’t want my bow and arrows taken up again for trying to slay an orc. I wasn’t really going to slay the orc. I was just pretending to violently fling arrows at it. I’d go with Haldir but I think I should avoid a character that has a bow and arrow. All elves are now out of the equation.
Any suggestions?
Stanley Kubrick instructed Marisa Berenson to keep out of the sun in the months before production in order to achieve the period-specific pallor he required.
If you haven’t seen Barry Lyndon, you are missing the most amazingly beautiful woman (Marisa Berenson) and costumes
“A myth grew up that the Academy Award-winning costumes used in the film were genuine antique clothes, but this is only partly correct. Some of the costumes were genuine antiques bought at auction by costume designer Milena Canonero, while others were custom made specifically for the film and were based on clothing of the period and costumes seen in period paintings.” IMDb
Ruskin married Effie Gray in 1848, when he was 29 and she was 19. On the couple’s wedding night, something about his bride — historians still debate exactly what — so horrified Ruskin that the union was not consummated.
“He alleged various reasons, hatred to children, religious motives, a desire to preserve my beauty, and, finally this last year he told me his true reason… that he had imagined women were quite different to what he saw I was, and that the reason he did not make me his Wife was because he was disgusted with my person the first evening 10th April.”
Divorce was illegal, so Effie suffered for years before falling in love with Millais, a leading member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of young painters whose bold style shocked and excited the Victorian art establishment. She married Millais and went on to have eight children. But love came at a price. Annulment from Ruskin barred her from some social functions. She was not allowed in the presence of Queen Victoria precluding invitations to events at which the Queen was present.
If you are going to remake a movie that doesn’t need to be remade at least have the decency to stick to the original setting and have the actors in appropriate 20s attire.
They are going to massacre one of my favorite books. It’s like a car accident. You see it happening but you can’t tear your eyes away.
One of my classmates just posted this link in our class facebook group so of course I had to pass it on to the costume enthusiasts here!!!!
The auction is on December 3rd, 2011 and here is a link to the website where you can download the free catalog!
Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)
My millinery lecturer is the man responsible for these lovely headdresses. During one of our sessions he covered some of the items he used in this film. Since then I’ve never been able to shop without thinking “Oooh potential headdress material right there.”
Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)
The Royal colour purple.
In the exhibition this costume was described as: “Supremacy. Purple silk moire robe, growing in stature to unapproachable scale and authority. Military command sealed with cut steel orders across a hardened bodice.”

My favorite costume movie is Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)
My favorite millinery lecturer is also the man responsible for all of the headdresses in this movie.
One of my lecturers is also partially responsible for that blue dress in photo 3.
